Anti-wrinkle injections have been around for some time now, which has allowed researchers to review the results of prolonged use.
An interesting study published by the UCLA School of Medicine followed identical twins over a period of 13 years.
Researchers compared the effects of anti-wrinkle injections on the sisters. One twin had regular wrinkle relaxer treatments (Botox). The other had only had two treatments, well before the study began.
As time passed, the sister who received regular Botox injections showed far fewer signs of aging than her sister. The non-treated sister had more highly visible wrinkles on her forehead along with frown lines. She also had far more visible crow’s feet than the sister who had received regular injections.
From this study, the researchers were able to conclude that “Long-term treatment with Botox can prevent the development of imprinted facial lines that are visible at rest. Botox treatment can also reduce crow’s feet.”
The researchers also found that “Treatment is well tolerated, with no adverse events reported during 13 years of regular treatment in this study.”
This research demonstrates that anti-wrinkle injections are effective and safe, as well as being an excellent, non-invasive option to help prevent wrinkles.
Anecdotally, an article published by theface.com shared the stories of women who have been having Botox treatments for more than a decade. Each one explained that they have been having regular injections and plan to continue doing so. One even explained that at age 55, she looks younger than she did ten years ago.
When are anti wrinkle treatments right for you?
Botox treatments have been steadily growing in popularity over the past three decades. Given their reputation for safety and effectiveness, when should you consider using them?
Firstly, it is unnecessary to begin such treatment if you are yet to develop visible wrinkles.
If lines are developing on your forehead or around your eyes and you feel uncomfortable when you see them, it might be the time to start considering anti-wrinkle injections. They are an excellent alternative to more intrusive and extreme treatments like surgery or laser treatment and a great place to start if you are new to cosmetic procedures.
Anti-wrinkle injections are mostly painless. They are best for forehead wrinkles but can also treat many other ‘trouble’ areas, including the areas around your eyes and lips. Your treatment is quick (you can have it during your lunch break) and you are not likely to need a time out to recover.
If you have the following concerns about the appearance of your skin, you might consider Botox treatment:
- Crow’s feet
- Droopy brow
- Lines and wrinkles along the forehead
- Mild to moderate creases on the forehead
- Fine lines around the under-eye area
One of the benefits of having Botox is that it can be tailored to your preferences. For example, you may be after a look that is very different and makes you appear to be years younger. Alternatively, you could be seeking to diminish the appearance of specific lines on your face which bother you when you look in the mirror.
An additional benefit is that these treatments are not permanent. If you’re not completely happy with the outcome, you can request a different application at your next appointment.
Anti-wrinkle injections: Proceed with caution
Dr. Joanna Teh a cosmetic physician from Dermedica Cosmetic Medical Clinic said, ‘Almost all patients tolerate Botox injections well and the short-term side effects are generally very minimal. However, if you’re considering this type of treatment, you should speak to a qualified doctor to discuss about your expectations, potential side-effects, and benefits.’
While the products used in anti-wrinkle injections are considered very safe, you still need to make sure they are being administered by a qualified professional. When you go to someone who is not a medical doctor who specialises in this area, you risk a negative outcome due to their lack of experience.
Always visit a practitioner who is focused on facial rejuvenation and has an established reputation in your area. And be aware of low-cost or highly discounted treatments as you may not end up receiving the outcomes you were hoping for.
The most important thing when seeking anti-wrinkle injections is to find a qualified practitioner. Experience and qualified specialists will definitely give you the best and safest results. They will take the time to schedule an initial consultation with you so they can get to know you, your face, and your preferred outcome. They will then apply your treatment in a completely safe and hygienic environment.
