Frequently Asked Questions
How does IPL hair removal work?
IPL works by targeting the colour pigment (melanin) in the hairs. The light destroys the hairs while they are in their active growth stage leading to permanent hair reduction, and in some cases removal.
IPL hair removal can be applied anywhere you do not like hairs to appear. Common treatment areas include underarms, bikini area (brazilian, G-string or standard), face, legs, arms, chest and back hairs, nipple hairs and ‘snail trail’/stomach hair.
How many IPL hair removal treatments are required to get permanent hair removal?
Only hair in the growth phase can be treated most effectively with IPL hair removal. The number of hairs in this phase varies from 10-70%. The length of the growth cycle also varies.
For effective hair removal, treatment sessions are recommended every 4-6 weeks. The number of sessions you will require depends on the distribution of hairs, hormonal and genetic predisposition. Most people can achieve permanent hair reduction and some may achieve permanent hair removal. Results will vary between individuals.
How do I prepare for IPL hair removal treatment?
Patients should avoid tanning and must not use any fake tan six weeks ahead of and during their entire treatment period to avoid excessive discomfort from light absorption in the skin.
Is permanent hair removal possible?
Most people will get a longer lasting hair reduction compared to waxing and shaving. Some people may experience permanent hair removal after multiple treatments, however result vary depending on individuals.
Is laser or IPL hair removal painful?
No anaesthesia is required for laser or IPL hair removal.
As the light energy is taken up by the skin pigments (melanin and haemoglobin) the follicle will heat, with any discomfort depending upon the combined concentration of melanin in the skin and the hairs. Most patients describe the discomfort as moderate and acceptable, and liken it to a rubber band being flicked against the skin.
How much downtime is there after IPL hair removal?
There is no downtime – you can head back to work, social activities, and everyday life on the same day.
How long does IPL hair removal treatment take?
For hair removal, hair follicles need to be destroyed in their active growth phase so you will need multiple treatments to achieve the best result. One session typically takes 10 to 30 minutes, depending on the surface area being treated.
Are there any side effects with IPL hair removal?
Some patients may experience some redness immediately after treatment, which will usually subside after several hours. However, most patients experience no side effects at all. In very rare cases, hyperpigmentation, hypopigmentation or blistering may occur. In experienced hands, the risk of burns and scarring can be minimised – although uncommon side effects and complications may occur.
As with all medical procedures, there are potential risks and side effects. It is important to have a thorough discussion with an experienced cosmetic doctor to assess your risks and side effects.

What hair colour or types are suitable for hair removal treatment? Is it suitable for me?
Dark hairs are most easily treated due to the large concentration of pigment in these hairs, which gives an optimal absorption and conversion of light energy to heat. Fair hair has less melanin and consequently less heat is produced with less certainty of permanent destruction of the hair follicles. Grey (white) hair has almost no melanin and cannot be effectively treated. The ideal candidate for hair removal is fair skinned with dark hair.

Why does hair grow back after IPL treatment?
Unlike some other hair removal systems, the hairs are not evaporated by IPL treatment. The hair follicles are killed by the heat but the hairs remain in the follicles. They will fall out after 1-3 weeks as the skin is renewed. During this period, it will seem that the hairs are growing as they are pushed out by the skin.
What are the results and benefits of having IPL or laser hair removal?
IPL hair reduction can give a longer lasting result than waxing or shaving. Over a course of treatments, the treated hairs can become finer, lighter, sparser and slower growing. There are individual variations to the degree of hair reduction one can achieve from IPL hair removal.
